Overview
Gaviota is the gateway to Hollister Ranch, reportedly some of the very best surfing on the west coast as well as some of the priciest real estate in the country. Alcatraz anchorage is just off Gaviota State Park, which has a pier, campgrounds, great hiking trails and glorious views.
Approach
If you’re sailing west you’ll spot Gaviota pass where the 101 hooks north. Just beyond that you’ll see the railroad overpass and just below that the 400’+ pier.
Anchoring
We anchored in about 25 feet of water, sand bottom about 100 yards west of the pier, though if you want to go ashore, anchoring to the east is OK and closer to the beach.
Uncharted Hazards
Weather. Fog. Unpredictable canyon winds. All of that makes this a dubious overnight anchorage, though possible in very settled conditions.
